Indigo

I like the results of recent work with natural indigo dye. My Fedco Seed catalogue arrived this week, so I left it out to read with breakfast. When I got up it was open to the dye plant page (my husband is a gem!). I decided to order indigo, madder and weld seed for my garden this year.

I had already decided to teach a natural dyeing class in Ithaca this summer, so having dye plants in class seems a natural addition. The madder, will take three years to mature enough to use. So this year will see blue and yellow natural dyes.

Fedco also offers sunflower seed for plants that the Hopi used to dye baskets. I am very interested in American dyes and Dye practices, so I think I will try them as well.
